The global food system generates more than 30% of human-made greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with animal-people products producing 90% more than their vegan alternatives. In response to this problem, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors passed legislation in February 2024 and the Department of Public Health (DPH) updated its nutritional guidelines to require county food services to provide daily vegan entrées and dairy alternatives. Moreover, the Board recommended a 2:1 ratio of vegan to non-vegan entrées and the use of vegan products when possible. Data collected after the changes are implemented, including emissions reduction targets, will be published on DPH’s website. Educational materials on animal-people products’ environmental effects will also be distributed to county departments. Congratulations, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, on acting to mitigate climate change. May such policies spread across the nation, in Heaven’s blessings.
