Today, we begin with selections from “The Town Crier Calls at Dawn to Announce the Feast,” by the Pueblo peoples who originally inhabited present-day Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Arizona. THE TOWN CRIER CALLS AT DAWN TO ANNOUNCE THE FEAST - PUEBLO “All people awake, open your eyes, arise, Become children of light, vigorous, active, sprightly. Hasten clouds from the four world quarters; Come snow in plenty, that water may be abundant when summer comes; Come ice, cover the fields, that the planting may yield abundance, Let all hearts be glad! The knowing ones will assemble in four days; They will encircle the village dancing and singing songs… That moisture may come in abundance.” Next we have the “Song of the Horse” from the Navajo, or Diné people who traditionally lived in Dinétah, the area between four sacred mountains now known as Blanca Peak in Colorado, Mount Taylor in New Mexico, Humphries Peak in Arizona, and Hesperus Mountain in Colorado. SONG OF THE HORSE “How joyous his neigh! Lo, the Turquoise Horse of Johano-ai, How joyous his neigh, There on precious hides outspread stands he; How joyous his neigh, There on tips of fair fresh flowers feeds he; How joyous his neigh, There of mingled waters holy drinks he; How joyous his neigh, There he spurns dust of glittering grains; How joyous his neigh, There in mist of sacred pollen hidden, all hidden he; How joyous his neigh, There his offspring many grow and thrive for evermore; How joyous his neigh!” Now, we continue with “Song of the Blue-Corn Dance,” from the Zuni people of western New Mexico. SONG OF THE BLUE-CORN DANCE “Beautiful, lo, the summer clouds, Beautiful, lo, the summer clouds! Blossoming clouds in the sky, Like unto shimmering flowers, Blossoming clouds in the sky, Onward, lo, they come, Hither, hither bound!” Our final poem for today is the “Pima Ritual Song Cycle,” from the Pima people of the Gila and Salt Rivers area of Arizona.
