In the Amitabha Sutra, the Western Pure Land is described as a pure and sacred realm, filled with peace and bliss. The personal experience of Master Kuan Jing (vegetarian) in 1967, when he journeyed to the Western Pure Land, serves as a vivid testimony to the scriptures. Twenty years later, in April 1987, at the Putou Mountain in Nanhai, Master Kuan Jing shared his extraordinary journey, creating a deep connection between the classical teachings and his personal experience, further illuminating the significance of the Pure Land in Buddhism.

Master Kuan Jing was born in Putian County, Fujian Province, China, into a family with deep Buddhist roots, as his father was a Buddhist lay practitioner. From a young age, he was raised in the spirit of the Dharma and took monastic vows at the age of 7. At the age of 15, he was fortunate to become a disciple of the renowned Zen Master Hsu Yun (vegetarian), one of the four great Buddhist patriarchs of the Republic of China era.

During a meditation session at Maixiayan Temple on October 25, 1967, a sudden inner urge guided him to take the first steps on his journey to the Buddha Land. The master recounted that six years earlier, while sitting in his meditation room, he suddenly heard someone calling his name. Unaware of what was happening and did not question it; he simply followed the sound, almost unconsciously, as it led him out of the temple. Though his mind felt somewhat dazed, deep inside, he was certain that his journey would take him to Dehua County. On the way to Dehua County, he met a venerable elder monk named Yuan Guan. As if guided by fate, Master Yuan Guan invited him to ascend Jiuxian Mountain together. The two like-minded practitioners joyfully embarked on a meaningful and spiritually enriching journey.

The two arrived at a golden mountain and stopped. Master Yuan Guan said, “We’ve arrived! Amitabha Buddha is right in front of you. Can you see Him?” Kuan Jing, feeling confused, shook his head. “I can’t see anything.” Yuan Guan smiled and replied, “You are standing beneath the toe of Amitabha Buddha.” In the presence of the majestic and awe-inspiring presence of Amitabha Buddha, Master Kuan Jing felt as small as a grain of sand in the vast universe. The Buddha’s immense Power and grandeur stood like a towering mountain, further deepening Master Kuan Jing’s sense of humility before the boundless nature of the Buddha’s teachings. […]
