Sudan, a country that has already been grappling with the ravages of civil war, has been struck by yet another tragedy: devastating floods. Flash floods have devastated villages in Sudan, destroying more than 35,500 homes and damaging nearly 45,000 more. Since the rains began in June 2024, approximately 490,000 people across 63 localities in 15 states have been affected, according to the Sudan Floods Dashboard. More than 143,000 individuals have been displaced, leaving many in desperate need of assistance after losing everything.In the summer of 2024 West and Central Africa were hit hard by floods. According to the United Nations, severe flooding in Chad since July 2024, has claimed 503 lives and affected approximately 1.7 million people. More than 200,000 homes have been destroyed, and 350,000 hectares of farmland inundated. In Niger, the death toll exceeds 265. Mali is experiencing its worst flooding since the 1960s, with 55 fatalities reported. According to UN estimates floods have devastated food supplies for 8.5 million Nigerians. Nigeria is experiencing multiple climate-related challenges simultaneously. In addition to floods and droughts, rising sea levels threaten the coastal areas. “More than two-thirds of Ayetoro has been claimed by this sea erosion.” The erosion has impacted daily life here in almost every way. “To get water has been so difficult.
