Today, I’d like to offer a useful tip. Standing or stagnant water can breed mosquitoes, damage turfgrass, and turn your yard into a muddy mess. Fortunately, there are a few ways to reduce or eliminate stagnant water and improve your lawn’s drainage. Water your lawn less often or for shorter periods to prevent saturation. If water consistently collects in certain areas, a professional landscaper can assess and re-grade the terrain. Remove heavy layers of leaves, grass clippings, and other debris with a lawn rake or dethatcher to help water reach the soil. Once the surface is clear, aerate compacted soil with a garden fork or lawn aerator to improve drainage. If hardpan is present, break up the compacted layer with a shovel during a dry period. Add organic matter such as compost or leaf mold to improve soil structure and drainage. Additionally, create deeper lawn borders to direct excess water away from turfgrass.
